Welcome back to Philly, Mr. Gruden

You would think Andy Reid would be the guy in the hot seat as his bedraggled Eagles get ready to take on the equally miserable Carolina Panthers tonight on national TV as Monday Night Football comes to town.

I have another name for you to consider.

Jon Gruden.

The one-time Eagles assistant and Super Bowl-winning coach will be in the house tonight in his role as color man on the TV broadcast with play-by-play man Mike Tirico on ESPN.

How long until the chants of ‘We Want Gruden’ starting resounding across the Linc, especially if the Eagles once again play the way they have for most of this season, like guys who got introduced to each other yesterday?

It seems pretty much a foregone conclusion that Andy Reid is in the process of coaching the final six games of his 14-year stint as boss of the Birds. Gruden’s name has been mentioned by more than one expert, even though he recently got a new deal from the sports network. I don’t think it would take much to lure him out of the booth. But here’s the thing. Yes, Gruden has won a Super Bowl. But that Tampa Bay Bucs team was largely put together by Tony Dungy, who just could not get his team over that final hurdle. Oddly enough, much like Andy Reid. Remember when the Eagles used to make the playoffs every year.

Gruden’s teams in Tampa and Oakland had some down years to go along with that Super Bowl.

I think more importantly for the Eagles is who is going to be making the decisions concerning both the next coach, as well as the high pick the team will collect courtesy of this woeful season.

Do you want Howie Roseman making those decisions?

Can you say Danny Watkins?

Welcome home, Mr. Gruden. Should be an interesting night, likely more so for what is happening off the field than anything that occurs inside the white lines.
