Irish Eyes are cryin' - unless they're also Eagles fans

Notre Dame fans probably thought things could not get much worse after Alabama knocked most of the golden off those domes in the BCS championship game Monday night.

They were wrong.

Brian Kelly, the man who woke up the echoes and restored the Irish to national prominence, may be leaving.

But all is not lost for Notre Dame fans - if they happen to also be Eagles fans.

That’s because Kelly apparently is now on the Birds’ radar for their vacant head coaching position.

Word started leaking out last night that Kelly had interviewed with the Eagles’ brass as a possible replacement for Andy Reid.

Kelly recently referred to the head coaching position at Notre Dame as his “dream job.” But after a nightmarish thrashing at the hands of the Crimson Tide, who laid a 42-14 drubbing on the Irish, Kelly may be rethinking his chances of winning a BCS title. The monster that is the SEC has now won the last eight national championships.

In the meantime, the Eagles today are expected to interview ousted Bears head coach Lovie Smith.

Eagles fans anxious to know who might be the Birds next leader may have to sit tight. It’s believed the Eagles may want to talk to Kelly again, but will not be able to do so until he returns from a vacation abroad.

The Eagles have already interviewed Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, and are expected to talk to Seahawks’ defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, whose team is of course still very much alive in the NFL playoffs.

Two other college coaches have already turned their backs on the Eagles and the NFL. Both Penn State’s Bill O’Brien and Oregon’s Chip Kelly are sticking with their college teams.

Doesn’t sound like Andy Reid’s replacement is going to be named anytime soon.
