No joy in Mudville, er, Philly

Someone please tell me that Wing Bowl is not going to be the highlight of our winter sports season.

Talk about the winter of our discontent.

The NFL playoffs used to be something we actually experienced around here. Now we just watch them on TV. We talk about the Harbaugh brothers, one of whom used to be the special teams coach of the Eagles. OK, raise your hand if you’re tired of the Harbaugh theme already. We will spend most of this week talking about the staff being put together by new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. Hey, how ‘bout that Pat Shurmur? No, it doesn’t excite me either.

The Sixers? The most interesting thing about them is how much work Andrew Bynum is getting in on the team’s cranky treadmill. He still has not taken part in a single real practice, let alone an actual game. This is the guy the Sixers traded their best player for, then built a team around last year. In the meantime, the team is going nowhere. They blew another game last night, coughing up a late lead and falling in OT to the Spurs. They are now a less than mediocre 17-24 and a real threat to sit the playoffs out this year. Bynum says he’s pointing to a post-All Star game return. That is if he stays off the bowling alleys, I presume.

The Flyers are oh-for-the shortened season after the first weekend of play. Not exactly the start they wanted, dropping consecutive games over the weeknd to the Penguins and Sabres, in the process throwing cold water all over the excitement created by the end of the 113-day lockout. Ilya Bryzgalov appears to be every bit the conundrum he was for much of last year. They get another chance to break into the win column tonight vs. the Devils in North Jersey.

So bring on Wing Bowl.

And count the days until pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater.

And what was that about Cole Hamels’ shoulder? Never mind.
