Practice? Allen Iverson would be proud

Allen Iverson just wouldn’t get it. Yes, this is what we’ve been reduced to, Philly fans. We’re talking about practice.

Our hearts flutter at the site of 7-foot Andrew Bynum shooting foul shots. Not a game, but practice, as the Sixers great Iverson once intoned. Actually, we’re not even talking about practice. No, Bynum’s appearance on the court for the first time as a Sixer amounted to little more than a few baby jump hooks and some offerings from the charity stripe.

Bynum continues to try to rehab his ailing knees, a condition that has prevented him from taking part in a single full practice with the Sixers. As far as games go, your guess is as good as anyone’s when it comes to when we might actually see Bynum on the hardwood. Yesterday the guy around whom the Sixers built this team was sounding optimistic. Bynum said he hoped to be able to play “around the All-Star break.” I’ll believe that one when I see it.

Such is the winter of our discontent.

How desperate are we? Well, more than 4,000 people showed up to watch the Flyers practice on Sunday. Of course, this was not just any practice. It was the first official practice for the orange and black following the end of the 113-day lockout. Don’t blink, you might miss training camp. The Flyers will open their shortened season on Saturday when they host the Penguins.

Practice. We’re taling about practice. Somewhere, Allen Iverson must be smiling.
