All of a sudden we’re pretty popular with embattled Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.
Actually it would be more correct to say that our lead local columnist, Gil Spencer, can count on getting a Christmas card from the governor next year.
In case you haven’t noticed, the governor’s poll numbers are in the tank. And he’s staring at a re-election campaign in two years in which he just might face a challenge from his own party.
The governor made some headlines recently when he filed a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA in connection with the onerous sanctions they slapped on Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky saga.
The governor has been getting pretty well barbecued for his change of position as well as the lawsuit. Back when the sanctions were first announced, Corbett, who happens to sit on the school’s board of trustees, was in favor and urged the board to accept the penalty and move on. Now he’s singing a different tune. He says he now has had an opportunity to “view all the facts,” and has determined the NCAA not only overstepped its bounds, but it willfully violated its own principles and used Penn State as a punching bag to prop up their own sagging reputation as the overseer of college sports.
There have been very few voices raised in support of the governor.
Except one.
My buddy Gil is in the governor’s camp. He believes the governor is right and has a lot of not nice things to say about the NCAA. Don’t believe me? Check out his column here.
This morning, Gil will offer his side of the Corbett saga on Marty Moss-Coane’s radio show on WHYY-90.9 FM. Gil will be on discussing the Corbett lawsuit in the first hour of the show, 10-11 a.m. CLICK HERE to listen live. Also scheduled to appear is USA Today’s Sports Columnist Christine Brennan, who has been very critical of the governor.
Then on Wednesday night, we’ll be talking about the lawsuit on our ‘Live From the Newsroom’ live-stream Internet show. Spencer will debate fellow columnist Chris Freind, an outspoken critic of the governor and the lawsuit. We’ll be live7-7:30 p.m. Why not join the conversation? If you have a question you’d like our dueling columnists to answer, email it to editor@delcotimes.com.
Go get ‘em, Gil.
