The majesty that is Big 5 basketball

There is almost nothing in sports that quite compares to Big 5 basketball.

And in this winter of our sports discontent, it is a godsend.

Who needs Eagles playoffs when you have Villanova sticking it to No 5 Louisville and their blow-dried poster boy of a head coach Rick Pitino? Somewhere, John Pinone is smiling

So what if the Flyers have lost three straight to open the shortened NHL season when you have La Salle stunning No. 9 Butler? The legacy of Larry Cannon and Kenny Durette continues.

On two consecutive nights, two national powers learned you travel to Philadelphia at your own risk - and that of your big-time reputation.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about these two games is that neither occurred in that cozy basketball nirvana called the Palestra.

So the Big 5, along with its stepchild Drexel, will go back to beating each other’s brains out.

But not before once again reminding the nation that no city holds a hoops heritage that can match Phillyball.

Now if only that could translate to our sad-sack NBA franchise.
