O captain, my captain!

Attention Philadelphia athletes, in particular those who call themselves captain material.

You would do well to note what Flyers captain Claude Giroux did the last couple of days.

Actually, what he did Saturday was not that unusual. After the orange and black went through the motions Friday night in falling to the Devils in North Jersey, they failed to show up altogether the next night in Montreal, Giroux had seen enough.

After the game Giroux, the guy who wears the C on his sweater, ripped into his teammates for their lack of effort and said it was unacceptable. Yeah, right, we’ve heard that before.

But in a Monday afternoon President’s Day matinee on Long Island, the youthful Giroux put the puck where his mouth was. And in the net.

It took just 26 seconds for the captain to light the lamp and touch off a Flyers rout, a 7-0 pounding. Giroux had two goals and an assist. His newly constructed top line, with wingers Matt Read and Jakub Voracek, accounted for 10 points.

To which we can only say: O captain, my captain!

And if that’s not enough, columnist Jack McCaffery talked to veterand Mike Knuble, who knows that one win vs. the lowly Islanders does not a turnaround make.
