There was an unmistakable edge in Ryan Howard’s voice yesterday as he met the media yesterday on Day 2 of Phillies spring training in Clearwater.
Oh, sure the slugger with the nickname ‘Big Piece’ was joking around with reporters, especially when it comes to those who believe the Phillies have suddenly gotten too old to be considered contenders.
The edge in Howard’s voice belied the smile on his face.
Ryan Howard is made, he has something to prove, along with Roy Hallady, Chase Utley and the rest of the Phillies who for the first time in years watched other teams go to the playoffs last year.
Howard says he no longer even thinks about his Achilles after it cost him the first half of last season, and was still on his mind when he returned to the lineup.
