Spring is exactly six days away

Forget Michael Vick. And Thaddeus Young. And Andrew Bynum. And Ilya Bryzgalov.

OK, if you really must talk about Vick and the Eagles, all appearances are that new coach Chip Kelly is thawing somewhat to the idea of have No. 7 as his QB next year. That’s why it’s more and more likely that the Eagles are not going to release Vick today, even though it means they might be on the hook for $3 million that kicks in today. Actually, they won’t. Because if Vick is released later and signs with another team, that team then must pick up the $3M price tag.

Kelly now has until March 12 to figure out what he wants to do.

If you’re trying to figure this out, make sure you catch our Eagles beat writer Bob Grotz, who will explain it all to us when he appears with Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Crew on SportsRadio WIP 94-FM. Bob will be on at 8.

But the really important thing that will happen today has nothing to do with the Eagles. Or our winter teams, the Flyers and Sixers.

Insted, this is the day when “spring” officially starts.

The Phillies will load up their truck and head south to Clearwater. Pitchers and catchers report in exactly six days.

Spring can’t be far behind.

Make sure you pick up the Sunday Times for a full spring training preview from Phillies beat writer Dennis Deitch, as well as a special report from staff writer Tim Logue on Delco folks who make the annual pilgrimmage to sunny Florida. If you’re planning to do Clearwater again this year, Tim would like to talk to you. Email him at tlogue@delcotimes.com.
