There is a terrible sadness etched on the face of Maria Reyes Garcia-Pellon.
She appears on the front page of today’s newspaper after being charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband, former Penn basketball start Mathew White, in their Wallingford home.
Freinds and neighbors in the normally quiet commnity are dumbstruck at this violent incident.
They are trying to comprehend how a woman most described as a quiet, very peaceful person could be capable of such an act.
In in initial stages of the investigation, there were reports that she had told police that she caught her husband viewing pornography online. That may or may not be, but I get the feeling there is a lot more to this story than that reference. I think we are looking at one more instance of a struggle with mental health problems that came to a most tragic end.
Just before I left the office on Tuesday night, I received an email from an attorney who was a friend of the family. I called him. He hinted we were missing a crucial piece of the story, saying that he had been with the family last weekend and hinting at Garcia-Pellon’s mental health struggle.
For the full story, you can red Tim Logue’s piece here.
Columnist Gil Spencer talked to Garcia-Pellon’s lawyer, Kathy Labrum, who also suggested mental health issues as the root cause of the incident.
In the meantime, we once again are left to wonder about the demons many people struggle with each day, and the tragic way all too many of those cases end
