Corbett comes to Delco to push liquor privatization plan

Tom Corbett could use some friendly faces.

So, of course, he’s coming to Delaware County.

The governor will be in town today to speak to the Chamber of Commerce and push his plan to sell off state stores and use the money to set up “Passport for Learning” education block grants.

If he wants to stop in Primos I can assure him of one smiling face.

Mine.

I have not been a big fan of the governor. But I am the state’s foremost proponent of blowing up the archaic way this state deals with the sale of alcohol. Corbett is now pushing a move to sell off the 600 state stores and turn the operation over to private enterprise. He also wants to let big-box retailers and supermarkets in on the deal, while also liberating beer distributors from some of the restrictions they face.

I’ll drink to that. Unfortunately, not until after Lent.

Corbett will get a bit more good news later this afternoon when a state business group holds a rally in the rotunda of the state Capitol in Harrisburg to back the liquor privatization plan.

In case you haven’t noticed, there have not been a lot of pro-Corbett rallies these days.

He’s had a rough first two years. A new poll out yesterday indicated he trails almost every possible Democratic challenger, including Delco’s Joe Sestak, who hasn’t even made up his mind if he wants to run yet.

Then there is the potential challenge from within the GOP. Montgomery County Commissioner and former D.A. Bruce Castor continues to toy with the idea of taking on Corbett in the Republican primary. He’s also raising money.

Corbett has been dogged by everything from nasty cuts in education funding, the Penn State scandal, to his push to turn over management of the state lottery to a British firm.

He’s hanging his hat on getting some version of the liquor privatization plan on the books. But the word in Harrisburg, as usual, is that it may not happen. Maybe that’s why the governor is hitting the road again.

Welcome to Delco, governor.

While you’re here, you might want to skip down to Claymont and hit one of their wine super stores. Everyone else around here does.
