We interrupt the arrival of spring for this message: It's still winter

We have this just in: Spring has been canceled.

Pay no attention to all those people lined up for free water ice at Rita's.

Yeah, I know, the experts assure us that spring arrives in just a few minutes, 7:02 a.m. to be exact. Excuse me if I do not offer a standing ovation. To do so I would have to take off the coat, scarf and gloves I once again donned this morning.

Mother Nature for the most part spared us a lot of snow this winter, despite the constant hyperventilating of the TV types with every approaching storm.

And while most of them fizzled, the temperatures have not exactly sizzled.

I hate to bring this up, but does anyone remember this date last year? The first day of spring arrived with a flourish, as we donned T-shirts and shorts as the temperature soared to 78.

Now that's what I call spring. This year? Uh, not exactly. And here's even worse news. Better get used to it. It's apparently going to be cooler than normal for another couple of weeks.

Today will be chilly, with a high in the 40sand gusty winds. At least it will be sunny. We actually might get a break this weekend with a couple of days in the 50s, but then it's expected to get cold again. The average temperature for this time of year is in the mid-50s.

The forecasters tell us temperatures won't warm up until the first couple of weeks in April. Swell. Let's hope they're about as accurate with that call as they were with their snow forecasts.

In the meantime, don't ditch that jacket as you stand in line at Rita's today. Hey, it's free isn't it?
