I have to admit there are some distinct advantages to a lot of the technology that we are swimming in these days.
Of course, there are the obvious ones. DelcoTimes.com frees us from the two constraints that have haunted editors forever - printing and delivering news once a day, and a lack of space to get in everything you'd like to feature.
At DelcoTimes.com, we now have the ability to deliver news to our readers 24/7. When there's a big fire that happens in the county overnight, we no longer are looking at a nearly 24-hour gap in our coverage. Instead, we send a text alert to our subscribers, post the news on the web site, as well as on Twitter and Facebook.
But one of the things I like most about working online is the way it allows us to engage readers. The idea is to have the community join us in gathering and delivering news. Today we kick off our latest piece of community engagement, this time a venture with our local police departments.
Congratulations to Eddystone Police Department, they are the first Delco department to give us their most wanted list. We're posting this information - including mug shots - on our Delco Most Wanted Pinterest page. You can check it out here.
But why should the good officers of Eddystone have all the fun. We know there are other departments that are looking for individuals. We have a spot for you to get that information out to the public.
Send us your mug shots and information and we'll post it on our Most Wanted page.
All we ask is that once someone on the list is captured, you let us know.
Send your information to police reporters Rose Quinn and Cindy Scharr at rquinn@delcotimes.com and cscharr@delcotimes.com.
If you have another idea that you think would benefit the public, by all means let me know. As I said, the other fascinating thing about the Internet is that - unless Al Gore just discovered it - there is no end to it. I'm looking for ways to partner with the community to take advantage of this great way to share information.
We already have a long list of bloggers who are posting news from their communities as part of our Community Media Lab. The possibilities are endless.
Give me your ideas. I'll be like Ross Perot - all ears.
