A taxing situation

There might be at least one group that's not up in arms at the prospect of having to pay taxes on your online purchases.

That's what's behind a measure passed by the U.S. Senate yesterday. I wouldn't get too worked up about it. The bill now goes to the House, where it faces a much more serious test. You can read all the details here.

Then again, if you owned a store just over the line in Delaware, you might not be all that upset about the notion of taxing online purchases.

As Steve Barrar and every other legislator whose district is within a stone's throw of the Delaware line can attest, the folks down there like to proclaim themselves as the "home of tax-free shopping."

Every time some bright thinker in Harrisburg says we should hike the state sales tax, Barrar is right there to say that would be anathema for all the merchants in the lower end of the county who have to battle their Delaware neighbors for business every day.

So what do you think would happen - especially around the holidays - if those online purchases that are all the rage were also subject to a sales tax?

Yeah, I agree. You could just follow the cars headed for Total Wine and other spots in Delaware as folks check off their holiday shoppign lists.

Now remember, when you buy that big-ticket item in Delaware, you are supposed to report it to your home state and pay the appropriate sales tax.

Everyone who has done that raise your hand.

Thought so.

Delaware. Small Wonder. But big player when it comes to tax-free shopping.
