How gun control advocates lost the background check war

In my continuing push to hear from all sides, some more thoughts today from ardent Second Amendment advocate Dan McMonigle of Newtown Square. Dan's a longtime NRA member who believes that, once burned, no one should hold their breath waiting for Republican Pa. Sen. Pat Toomey take up the mantle of "gun control" again.

Toomey went way out on a limb in the gun control debate, only to have it sawed out from under him.

But more than that, McMonigle believes those who are pushing for gun control are making a fundamental mistake with their constant talk of "banning" things.

He says it a lot better than I could. Take it away, Dan:

"I think I told you that real gun legislation will not happen unless the fringe folks on guns, like Feinstein, Bloomberg, Schumer, McCarthy, Bloomenthal and many others get away banning things.

"The anti-gun crowd threw the kitchen sink at it. They could have truly reached some legislation that could have seriously enhanced the existing background check.

Below is a list of things they did wrong.

• Feinstein rifle ban. She is responsible for 3/4s of the NRA new members.

• Magazine ban. This is additional membership increases.

• Biden telling people to buy a shotgun and shoot it in the air. He is such a hoot telling people to break the law.

• Biden changing rules and telling people to shoot through the door. Another law-breaking tale from Joe.

• Biden telling the NRA, "get on board or we will truck right over you." The NRA graciously refused.

• Cuomo changing laws in N.Y. overnight with no public notice. Even police have 7-round limit in N.Y., which they ignore.(Constitutional lawsuits already pending.

• Colorado passing laws that 3/5th of the state's sheriffs will not follow, and the sheriffs have filed legal disputes against state legislators. (Sheriffs in Colorado are different from our County sheriff, they are the law enforcement in the state. Constitutional lawsuits already pending.

• The media blasting Wayne LaPierre for suggesting armed guards in schools. (Which many now have BTW). 2 weeks later the POTUS says it in his executive directives and is praised for leadership.

"The NRA did not win this. The anti-gun folks lost it.

"They need experts on guns to educate them on their stupidity.

"Anyway, I think the mayor of Chester and I could come up with serious gun legislation that would help him and protect my Second Amendment rights. HIPPA law changes, mental health issues more out in the open. But I still think this was not about legislation or making the country safer, I truly believe, in all my heart, they wanted to take the guns. Just a piece here now, then more later. The anti gun folks are happy to get any win and will stoop to anything to do it. That is their Achilles heal, they are predictable."

Well said, Dan.
