Some numbers to go with that NRA conference

My favorite Delco Second Amendment backer, longtime National Rifle Association member Dan McMonigle, checked in yesterday with his own version of my Daily Numbers list, this one tied to the group's recent annual conference in Houston.

I'll let the numbers stand for themselves.

5 million members announced.

• New memberships and upgrades: $1,340,107. This is an 86% increase over last year.

• NRA Store Sales: $672,762, which is a 54% increase over last year.

• Foundation Banquet: $511,761. Largest ever.

• ILA Dinner: $800,000+, New record.

• Women’s Leadership Forum: $1.2 million. Largest ever.

• And total attendance? 86,228. That’s 12,488 more than the previous record of 73,740.

And this from some fringe, irrelevant organization that only represents the gun manufacturers.

Dan and I are not going to agree on a lot of gun issues. But I think he raises a legitimate point when he references the way the NRA is so often harpooned in the media. Of course, they bring a lot of that on themselves, in particular the statements of some of the group's leaders.

As I've said many times, guns aren't going away anytime soon. Neither is the Second Amendment. That doesn't mean we can't talk about gun control.

As he's proved any number of times on our 'Live From the Newsroom' show, McMonigle is not afraid to debate anyone on the issue.

I don't have a problem with that. The more we talk about it, the closer we might get to some common ground on the issues.
