In sports, it is the ultimate in mediocrity.
And the Phillies can't even climb that modest hill.
.500. Winning the same number of games that you lose.
Every time the Phillies seem ready to climb that hurdle, they make like Sisyphus and watch the rock roll back down to the bottom of the hill.
Every time the Phils get withing a game of that piddling .500 mark this year, they have lost. It happened again last week in D.C., when the Phils had the opportunity to even their record in a stint with their NL East rivals the Nationals.
Didn't happen.
Instead, the Phillies stumbled again. Last night they went to Fenway Park in Boston and got blown out, 9-3.
That leaves them 3 games under .500 and 6 and a half behind the Braves. Dennis Deitch has all the details here. Jack McCaffery offers his take here.
Memorial Day is now in the rear-view mirror. It is no longer "early."
I used to think this Phillies team was mediocre at best.
Turns out they can't even accomplish that.
Unless they turn things around quick, the team's brass may be forced to finally break up that core of Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.
