Memories of Lenape Park

Anyone else remember Lenape Park? It's the subject of today's Delco Daily Top Ten , by my ace blogger Mary Ann Fiebert. She certainly struck a chord with me. Every year, my elementary school, Assumption BVM School in West Grove, would hold our end-of-year picnic at the park, out on Route 52 on the Brandywine River outside West Chester. It was a classic, featuring an old, rickety wooden roller-coaster that always seemed like it was ready to fall apart. I think all the noise and bouncing back and forth only added to the thrill. I can still hear that sound of the huge chain slowly pulling the cars all the way to the top, inevitably followed by the shrieks of kids as the cars plummeted down the other side. The Merry-Go-Round featured horses that you would 'ride' and try to grab a ring as you went around. Legend had it that there was supposed to be a gold ring in there somewhere, which you could redeem for free rides for life. We never saw hide nor hair of it. There w

A face meant for radio

Had an opportunity make my radio debut Saturday. Our lead sports columnist, Jack McCaffery, doubles as a weeekend host on sports talk radio WEPEN-950. Jack asked me if I would come on and talk about the deal to funnel $47 million in state funding into the project to build a professional spors stadium in Chester. I agreed. There is just as much anonymity on radio as there is in the newspaper. And if you've seen this mug, you'll know it's a countenance that was made for the newspaper. While I was on with Jack (longtime listener, first-time caller) I made the point that thew newspaper has been a big booster of this project on our editorial page, which makes us something of a minority in the media across the state. If you haven't noticed, there is not a lot of fervor out there to continue pouring taxpayer monday into these kinds of stadium projects. 50 years later, a salute to the blood brothers of Oxford High

Fifty years ago, I had a life-altering experience. My nose and lungs were filled with the smell of grass. I listened intently as that siren sound of summer, August’s crickets and cicadas, filled their air with their distinctive chirp. I was face down in a field next to Oxford Area High School, wondering what in God’s name I had gotten myself into.
