Utley latest Phil to land on shelf

Look at the bright side, Phillies fans.

Charlie Manuel no longer has to worry how he's going to get at-bats for Freddy Galvis.

That's my effort to put a silving lining on the latest dark cloud to form over the Phillies. Chase Utley is on the shelf. Read it for yourself here. That twinge in his ribcage is a strained oblique. Yesterday the Phils put Utley on the 15-day disabled list.

They go into  Washington tonight just one game behind the struggling Nats, who are not exactly living up to their billing either. Dennis Deitch has those details.

Utley joins Carlos Ruiz on the sidelines, that's two big cogs in your starting lineup. Not to mention the loss of starting right-handed ace Roy Halladay.

Nothing is going to come easy for this Phils' team this year. Maybe they're waiting for warm weather. That's not a good omen for this Memorial Day weekend. It's supposed to be cool and wet.

Someone else on this team will have to pick up the ball. Ryan Howard, who has been struggling with a balky knee of his own, is notorious as a hot-weather hitter. He'll need to warm up fast if this team hope to survive its latest setback.
