Chester's Big Two talk street violence on 'Live From the Newsroom'

My thanks to Chester Mayor John Linder and Police Commissioner Joe Bail, who were our guests on our 'Live From the Newsroom' show last night.

The mayor and top cop explained their decision not to enact a State of Emergency after a recent fatal shooting, but stressed to residents that they were taking steps to attack the street gun violence that afflicts the city.

And it seems to be working. After a bad week with several shootings that culminated Friday morning in a wild, daylight, shoot-'em-up in which a gunman opened fire on a moving car, wounding two people and causing the car to go out of control, the city has been fairly calm so far this week.

One of the victims died later in the day. Many residents wanted a State of Emergency similar to one that was put in place several years ago - which basically banned groups from meeting in public and ordered all residents off the streets at night.

If you missed the show, make sure you catch the replay here.

Both Linder and Bail stressed one thing: This is a two-way street. If residents want to take back their communities, police certainly will assist, but they can't do it alone. People need to tell authorities what they know.

Bail said police got some information immediately after Friday's deadly shooting, but since then the tips have trailed off. He did say police have several suspects in the case.

As usual, today will be a big day in the city. Let's make it a safe one!
