Thosse confounding Phillies

The Phillies need to make up their mind.

In or out.

Last night, with fans clambering to climb back on the bandwagon amid the team's recent hot streak, including taking two of three against the Braves, and the first two games against the Nats, the Phillies sent their best pitcher to the hill in an effort to climb back to the .500 mark.

Ugh, never mind.

Cliff Lee suffered a serious case of homer-itis. The lefty gave up four solo home runs - back-to-back dingers in back-to-back innings in the fifth and sixth. The Nats never looked back and the Phils' bats went dead against Gio Gonzalez, yes the very same Gio Gonzalez who once wore Phillies pinstripes.

The depressing 5-1 loss means the Phils failed to even their mark, instead slinking back to two games under .500 at 45-47. They also missed a chance to make up ground on the Braves, who had lost in an afternoon game.

Looking for a bright spot? Daren Ruf hit his first home run, providing the only sign of life in the Phils' lineup.

The Phils and Nationals will tee it up one more time tonight, before the White Sox come to town for three weekend games before the All-Star break.

Buyers or sellers? Yeah, the question is still hanging out there.

What say you, Phillies fans? A win last night would have really amped up the fans. Instead the night turned into a slog, the hot, humid conditions broken up only by four thunderbolts from the Nats' lineup.
