Welcome to the home of the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates

The Phillies have now limped across the country after their less-than-successful and have landed in the home of their cross-state rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

That would be the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates, owners of the best record in baseball.

You read it right. The lowly Bucs are on fire. They have won nine in a row and go into tonight's three-game set with the Phils with a spiffy 51-30 record, two games better than the Cardinals in the NL Central. Meanwhile the Phillies arrive toting a 39-44 mark that is like an anchor around their neck.

The Pirates, who have been bad for what seems like forever, have shown signs of progress the last couple of years, only to fall off as the summer heats up. This year might be different.

Tonight they will send Jeff Locke to the mound, with his 7-1 record and 2.06 ERA to the mound. And, he's a left-hander. Attention Ryan Howard!

The Phillies are giving absolutely no sign of turning around their mediocrity.

Want a feel-good sports story to tide us over until the Eagles hit camp in a few weeks? How about  getting behind the Pirates. Tjhey've been awful forever. But this just might be the year they wake up the echoes of Mazeroski, Clemente and Stargell.
