A tough back to school story at DCCS

This is probably not the Back to School story the Delware County Christian School had in mind.

Their former softball coach has been charged with having a sexual relationship with one of her players. Lana Trotter turned herself in to face charges yesterday.

As you can expect, the media beat a path to the school's Newtown campus yesterday, and were greeted with a brusque request to leave.

A letter posted on the school's website said that the school had been made aware of the charges against the former part-time employee and that they were cooperating with authorities. Head of School Timothy Wiens noted that an internal investigation had been launched.

In his letter Wiens stressed that the school does not tolerate behavior that violates the law or school policy. He asked the school community to "pray that God will protect everyone involved."

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan had a slightly different view of what went on, calling it "every parent's fear." Trotter now faces felony charges including institutional sexual assault, something that came out of the Jerry Sandusky case. The statute applies to teachers, coaches and other professionals.

In the meantime, the school has to deal with the harsh headlines and actions of their former coach.

How long has she been a "former" coach? Was she still employed by the school when they were notified in July that this had taken place? Something doesn't smell right here.
