Community rallies around Penn Wood

There's an old saying in sports journalism: There's no cheering in the press box.

I'm going to make an exception to that standard today.

I will be openly cheering for the Penn Wood Patriots when they take the field today to kick off their football season at Kerr Field against West Chester East.

I don't have anything against East. It's just that these kids from Penn Wood have been through so much - and the school year hasn't even begun.

The football team is attempting to overcome the theft of much of their equipment - including helmets and shoulder pads. You can click here to see how much of Delaware County is rallying to help them out.

Among those offering to help out are District Attorney Jack Whelan, and Springfield Superintendent Jim Capolupo. There is word that the Kennett School District out in Chester County also is offering some of their equipment.

It just proves how many good people there are out there. Much more than the few who continue to poke a stick in the eye of the Penn Wood community.
