The Heron's Nest: The saga of Ummad Rushdi and Hamza Ali

I have to admit it's a little ironic that my print column this week deals with delivering "good" news, and the overwhelmingly sad, depressing tone of so much of what is in the newspaper each day.

That's because for the past week, we have been covering one of the sadder stories we've seen in years.

It involves missing little 7-month-old Hamza Ali, who has now been gone from a home in Upper Darby since last Sunday. His mother's boyfriend, Ummad Rushdi, 30, has been charged with kidnapping the tot. Upper Darby Police Superintendent believes the baby is dead, and he bases that on interviews police have done with those close to the case, who apparently told authorities that Rushdi admitted he killed little Hamza.

But the toddler's body has not yet been recovered, despite searches both out near York where Rushdi lived, as well as here in Upper Darby.

Police will resume the search this morning.

We will bring you updates.

Yes, all too much of the news we deal with every day is unbearably sad.
