About those medicine drop boxes

OK, call me a cynic.

Did anyone else notice something about the press conference held yesterday by the county to roll out those medicine drop boxes, where people can dump their unused or expired prescription medicines? While Marple Police Chief Tom Murray was making the official announcement, he was flanked by two members of County Council.

That would be Dave White and Mario Civera. They just happen to be running for re-election on the November ballot. Coincidence? Probably. But I have to give the GOP credit. They're very good at what they do. No wonder the courthouse has been off limits to Democrats for as long as anyone can remember.

Make no mistake, this is a good program. Prescription drug abuse is a big problem in the county. Too many people who get legitimate prescriptions for painkillers wind up hooked. When that happens, they start looking for a way to get their hands on more pills. If it means breaking into someone's house, so be it.

Kids also are increasingly dipping into prescriptions held by moms and dads, who aren't always on top of just how many pills are in their bottles.

This also should go a long way to unused pills sitting around in people's medicine chests.

The drop boxes looks something like a UPS or Fed Ex Box. Here's one final question: How long before someone tries to haul one of them off for what they believe is a treasure trove of goodies inside? If they're willing to try to skate with an ATM machine, these drop boxes also might be targeted. You can read the whole story on the program here.

Phil, if you look back through your own stories you will see that Mario Civera and Dave White have been leading voices on the Heroin Task Force for the past year - not just weeks prior to an election. When Sen. Pat Toomey came to our Government Center in late spring/early summer this year, we requested time to meet with him to specifically discuss the heroin/pain killer drug problem in this area and get his support for the federal grant. And the drop boxes will be located inside the police stations, bolted to the floor - so good luck to the criminal who tries to break into one!
