As the (Flyers and Eagles) World Turns

This pretty much sums up yesterday in Philly sports: What do you think will happen first? Michael Vick plays another game for the Eagles, or the Flyers fire another head coach.

Yeah, it was that kind of day.

No one was surprised that Peter Laviolette is out as Flyers boss. If there was a constant theme through the exhibition season, it was that "Lavy" was on a very short leash.

But what was stunning was the GM Paul Holmgren and the Flyers pulled the trigger after just three games. We've got all the details covered here by beat writer Rob Parent, and columnist Jack McCaffery.

Granted, those were three straight losses, but really, three games? This smacks of something else, of Holmgren likely realizing he should have done this last spring.

Flyers owner Ed Snider did not make things much better with a less than gracious showing at the morning press conference announcing the change. Snider was irascible, combative and defensive in standing by Holmgren and defending the Flyers' "culture." He also noted that the Flyers preseason was the worst he's ever seen.

By the way, that "culture" is the same one that has not won a Stanley Cup since going back-to-back more back in the mid-70s.

In the meantime, across the street at the NovaCare Center, everyone wants to know the status of Eagles QB Michael Vick, last seen grabbing his hamstring in a win over the Giants on Sunday.

Head coach Chip Kelly is saying only that Vick is day-to-day, while several national outlets already are reporting Vick is out for Sunday's game vs. Tampa Bay. Kelly is denying those reports.

I'll be surprised if Vick starts on Sunday. There's no real need to rush him back. Foles showed Sunday is quite capable of running the team.

Things will get real interesting, if Foles leads the Birds to another win vs. the Bucs. Would Kelly then upset the apple car once again by going back to Vick once he's fully healthy. Kelly actually intimated yesterday that it's entirely possible for an injured player to lose his spot when his replacement suddenly catches fire.

No wonder Vick wants to get back in there.

If there's one thing we've learned from Vick's career, however, is that you better have an adequate backup. The Eagles are lucky to have Foles standing by ready to answer that call.

So much for all that talk once Vick was anointed the starter back in the preseason for the Eagles to trade Foles.

By the way, I do think Vick will be back before the Flyers make another move.

The job belongs to Craig Berube for now. But the question is for how long.
