Chester Mayor John Linder is going old school in the war on crime

Chester Mayor John Linder is going "old school" to stop the city's persistent gun crime.

Linder held a press conference Monday night to announce new, beefed-up foot patrols in troubled neighborhoods. You can get all the details here.

On Wednesday night, Linder and a panel of community activists will join us for our live-stream Internet broadcast, "Live From the Newsroom."

After we published the details of the fatal shooting of Rite Aid store manager Jason Scott McClay, some in the city questioned our motives and wondered about possible solutions.

I responded that I would be glad to talk about the city, and the gun problem that continues to cause problems. We'll do that tomorrow night.

We will be joined by community activist Joe Kane, who has run mentoring and tutoring programs in Chester Upland schools; our own Chester City blogger Stefan Roots, Bryan Miller, who used to be with CeaseFirePa and is now involved in a new program starting up in Chester called Heeding God's Call, a faith-based and grassroots movement to prevent gun violence; and Kenny Covert from the Brothers of Concern grass roots organization.

I'd also like to know what you think.

But a caveat here. I have no interest in the kind of racist drivel that dominates so much of the online comments linked to every story we do on the city of Chester.

If you have real questions you'd like the panel to answer, by all means email them to me at editor@delcotimes.com.

Mayor Linder and Police Commissioner Joe Bail have drawn another line in the sand. They putting feet on the street to combat crime.

It's not the first crackdown in the city of Chester.

We'll see if it works.

I'd like to be part of the solution. There are a lot of good things happening in Chester. I invite you to join me in being part of the answer.
