No longer the winter of our sports discontent

Suddenly, the winter of our sports discontent is getting a lot more interesting.

All of a sudden our Philly teams are turning into juggernauts.

Those confounding Sixers continue to do things no one expected them to do under new coach Brett Brown. Last night, even without rookie star Michael Carter Williams in the lineup, they scratched and clawed their way to an overtime win over the Houston Rockets. The guy who took Carter-Williams' place in the lineup? That would be that Tony Wroten. All he did was put up a triple-double - 18 points, 11 assists and 10 boards. Chris Vito has all those details here.

Those struggling Flyers? They have now won three straight, including a most improbably back-to-back road wins on successive nights in Ottawa and Pittsburgh. The Flyers got strong goaltending from Ray Emery in the net and just enough offense to handle their arch-rival the Penguins.

Rob Parent was there.

On Sunday, the Eagles can take control of first place in the NFC East by beating the Redskins, while the Cowboys have a bye week.

And just for good measure, both Saint Joe's and Villanova posted hoops wins last night. Winter sports just got a lot more interesting.
