A holiday toast - to cutting the size of Legislature

Here's something you don't see every day.

A governing body is looking at trimming the fat - its own!

The Pennsylvania House yesterday passed a measure the would shrink the size of the Legislature, one of the biggest and most expensive in the nation. You can read all the details here.

Under the plan, the House of Representatives would be cut from 203 to 153 members. Another House bill would take the ax to the Senate, cutting its size from 50 members to 38.

One of the co-sponsors of the measure is none other than Delco's own state Rep. Bill Adolph, R-165, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

"Reducing the size of the Legislature is a common-sense reform measure that can save Pennsylvania taxpayers approximately $23 million a year and will allow for a more efficient deliberative process in the General Assembly," Adolph said.

He won't get any argument from us.

But he apparently will from state Reps. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-159, of Chester, and Greg Vitali, D-166, of Haverford. The two Democrats both voted against cutting the size of the House. All other members of the Delco delegation voted in favor of the plan.

What a shock that the democrats think it's a bad idea. They might have to look for a real job now.

Cutting the number of legislatures is a horrible idea. The concept of a representative democracy is for we the people to have access to the legislators. It is already close to impossible to meet with many of them face to face. It will be even more difficult if they have to represent a greater area and a greater number of people.
