It's hard to believe it's possible, but the incredibly sad case of Christian Massey just got sadder.
Massey is the former athlete at Marple Newtown High School who was gunned down on a Philadelphia street. Police say he was slain by a robber who wanted his expensive Beats By Dr. Dre headphones.
Massey's death has hit the Marple Newtown community hard. The hulking, 6-foot-3 Massey, who tipped the scales at 300 pounds, played football and basketball for the Tigers. He went to Marple Newtown after being schooled at Don Guanella after being orphaned as a youngster.
Many in the community referred to him as a gentle giant.
"He wouldn't hurt a fly," said his aunt, Thelma Hodge.
In fact, police say he was trying to flee his assailant when he was shot.
Now the family is struggling to pay for Massey's funeral expenses. A group connected with the school is working through the Marple Newtown Home and School Association to raise the funds.
Christian Massey deserved better.
He certainly didn't deserve to be cut down over a pair of headphones.
Yesterday I noted that I just didn't get it.
That hasn't changed. I still don't get it.
