Why Sunday night's Eagles game vs. Bears matters

Much has been made of the fact that the Eagles will know their fate when they walk out onto the field at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday night to face the Bears in a Sunday night prime time affair.

That's because the Cowboys are in Washington to face their arch-rivals, the Redskins, in a 1 o'clock game. If the Cowboys win, the Eagles Sunday night is rendered moot - as far as the NFC East goes. If Dallas wins, it doesn't matter if the Eagles win or lose Sunday night. The NFC East will be decided in a winner-take-all game on the final Sunday of the season in Dallas. If the Cowboys lose, the Eagles will win the NFC East with a win Sunday night. If they match the 'Boys by falling to the Bears, the Eagles will still win the division if they beat Dallas the next week.

But even if Dallas wins at 1, the Eagles game will still mean something in terms of playoff seeding. Right now the Eagles are sitting at 8-5. If they finish with two more wins to get to 10-6, they likely would wind up with the No. 3 seed and possibly get a home playoff game.

But if they lose Sunday night, and then win in Dallas to take the NFC East, they likely would face the daunting challenge of going on the road in the first round of the playoffs, possibly to either New Orleans or Seattle.

The Birds should take a page out of the late Oakland Raiders legendary owner Al Davis' book: "Just win, baby."
