All hail the Penn Wood Patriots

Now I know we're having a most strange winter.

And it has nothing to do with the freezing rain and snow squalls that are supposed to make your morning commute interesting again on this Friday morning. By the way, don't panic, it's not going to amount to much and we're expecting temperatures near 60 tomorrow. Like I said - weird.

No, this has nothing to do with the weather - unless you consider the storm that erupted inside the Penn Wood High gym last night.

Don't look now, but there just might be a new king of the local courts.

The Penn Wood High Patriots knocked off the might Chester Clippers in a dandy of a Del Val league opener. It's Chester's second loss of the young season. The mighty Clippers, who lost in the state final to Lower Merion to snap their latest championship streak, now have two losses.

The Clippers routinely schedule a ferociously tough non-league early schedule, and some times pick up a loss or two along the way. But all that has usually done is tough them up for their Del Val League schedule and the state playoffs beyond.

But it was Penn Wood who came away with the win last night. It was Chester's first loss in Del Val action since Feb. 4, 2010. You can catch all the action here from Matt DeGeorge. Columnist Dennis Deitch also was on hand to salute the Patriots' effort.

The two teams will meet again later in the season on Chester's home hardwood.

By the way, this is as good an opportunity as any to remind you of our new home for high school sports online. Every day you can get all the action from every Delco contest at GameTimePa.com.
