3 things I just can't figure out

Here are three things I am no longer going to try to figure out:

* The Weather: We will approach 70 degrees this afternoon. That's the highlight. Unfortunately, that will be followed by rain, high winds and temperatures that will be falling through the basement. There's even a possibility of the rain changing to wet snow overnight. Tomorrow we will struggle to hit the freezing mark. In other words, spring remains pretty much a rumor. Kind of like the Phillies offense.

* Speaking of which, what do you make of the Phils. I'll tell you what I think. I think it's spring. Nothing that happens in Florida counts. And it's a good thing. The Phillies have been atrocious. They can't pitch, don't field very well, and their offense was last seen on a milk carton. In other words, things have gotten a bit sour around Clearwater. The Phillies' Grapefruit League leaves a lot to be desired. Cole Hamels is due to throw a bullpen session today. If he holds form, he'll likely have to cut that short, complaining of arm fatigue again.

Maybe we should all just take columnist Jack McCaffery's word for it. Don't panic. Remember, it's Florida. These games don't count. And it's a good thing.

* Then there is the Eagles. So much for making a big splash on the first day of NFL free agency. The Birds passed on the two premier safeties available and instead opted for a solid player in Malcolm Jenkins of the Saints. Bob Grotz has those details. In the meantime, Jairus Byrd went to the Saints, while T.J Ward inked a deal with the Broncos.

Word from New Orleans is that they were not especially pleased with Jenkins' play, thus the move to let him walk and go after Byrd.

Then again, look on the bright side. The Eagles got better yesterday when they released safety Patrick Chung, who was a disaster roaming the middle last year.

For now, Malcolm in the middle will have to do for Eagles fans.
