An idea for the Sixers

Here's an idea for the Sixers, aside from simply forfeiting the rest of their games in this God-forsaken year.

It's now pretty clear what is going on here. It's called "tanking." It's an ugly word in sports, but that appears to be the central element to the Sixers grand "Together We Build" plan to resurrect this once-proud franchise from the rubble of this ugly nadir.

No one expected the Sixers to beat Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder last night. Surprise! The Sixers got blown out again. Durant went off for 42 as the Sixers dropped their 15th straight game.

They now stand at 15-45 in their bid to acquire the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

Here's what I propose Sixers management do, although I'm not holding my breath.

They should pick one game remaining on their home schedule, and then simply open the doors.

For free.

If you can get to the Wells Fargo Center, come on in. Come on down and sit courtside if you like. See what the atmosphere of an NBA game is like, even if we're not putting an NBA product on the floor.

Those fans and season ticket holders who have bought tickets should get refunds.

Here is something the Sixers' brass probably have not considered. This is a proud city. We take our sports seriously. The idea of tanking to improve draft position is anathema.

And if by some miracle the Sixers do capture the top pick, turn around the franchise, and - wild as it may seem now - capture another NBA title, it will forever carry an asterisk in my book, courtesy of this hideous season.
