Taking to the street to fight violence in Chester

They will be taking to the street to fight violence again today in Chester.

District Attorney Jack Whelan will be joined by city leaders, community boosters and other law enforcement officials in a safety walk tonight as the city continues to fight another uptick in an old problem - random gun violence.

Tonight's walk is part of Operation City Surge, which city and county officials initiated in an attempt to get a bigger police presence on the streets in problem neighborhoods.

Officials will gather at 4 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 1100 West Second Street, at 4 p.m. The march will be followed by a community barbecue at 6.

The move is an effort to unite law enforcement with the community as they join together to battle violence. Officials will be looking to communicate with the public and offer information on the existing public safety partnerships already in place in the city under Operation City Surge.

Basically, police are hoping to team with residents to fight crime.

Operation City Surge was launched in early May. Led by the District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), law enforcement officers from the Chester Police Department, United States Marshals Service, Delaware County Narcotics Task Force, and Delaware County Sheriffs have been conducting warrant sweeps to take offenders off the streets.

Additionally, Chester police patrols have been beefed up with the presence of Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and SEPTA Transit Police.

Following tonight's public safety walk, the Rev. Joel McGee, leader of the Ministerial Fellowship of Chester & Vicinity, will be hosting a barbecue at Providence Baptist Church where residents, law enforcement officers and federal agencies will discuss safety issues and solutions in the city.

Every step makes a difference. We should all give of ourselves to help. It takes a neighborhood to raise a child; & a collaboration of all to ensure positive change.
