Fighting the violence in Chester

Turning around the city of Chester is not an easy task. Violent weekends like the one that just rattled the city don't help.

Police are investigating three different fatal shootings - including one that took the life of an innocent bystander - as well as a fatal hit-run accident.

The job of changing the image of Chester - both in the eyes of city residents and those who live outside its limits in Delaware County and region - is the job of the mayor's Community Liaison Office.

It's being tackled by people like Jonathan Abdur-Rahim King, Nicole Cogdell and Fred Green.

I think I might have jinxed them. A couple of weeks ago, I attended a business mixer at City Hall, and remarked to several people how quiet it's been since the city put 'Operation City Surge' into place after an initial spurt of violence at the beginning of the summer.

Unfortunately, things have gone downhill since.

That's whey they are pushing a series of community events.

This Saturday They are holding a Chester boot camp in Memorial Park with personal trainer Roland Taylor. If you want to register for the event, call 610-447-7700, ext. 1003.

The Community Liaison Office also is looking for more volunteers for their very successful Safe Corridors Program. Volunteers man key intersections near city schools to be sure kids stay safe and any potential incidents are short-circuited before they get serious.

And this Thursday the Community Liaison Office will hold a Safe Playgrounds Launch 6-8 p.m. at the Showalter Playground. If you're interested in helping, call the Community Liaison Office at 610-447-7700, ext 1202.

They can't do this alone. They need the city's help and cooperation.

Get involved if you have an interest in turning the city around.
