The Taney celebration continues; Broomall-Newtown has champions as well

The Taney Dragons bandwagon marches on.

Good for them.

Yesterday the champion Philly Little League team were welcomed home with a huge block party at LOVE Park in the city as they returned from Williamsport.

This morning they're in the Big Apple for an appearance on the 'Today' Show.

All of that is well and good.

But Mayor Michael Nutter has now gone once step further, saying the city will throw a parade for the Taney kids on Wednesday.

Am I the only one who believes this is now teetering on the brink of overkill?

Perhaps saddled with the Sports Illustrated curse after star pitcher Mo'ne Davis became the first Little Leaguer to appear on the cover of the sports mag, the Dragons promptly fell to Vegas, and then were elminated in a gut-wrenching loss to another urban team, from Chicago.

The Jackie Robinson team from Chicago in turn fell to South Korea in the championship game on Sunday.

I'm all for Taney. They were the feel-good sports story of the summer at a time when we direly need some good news.

I'm just not sure I'd be throwing them a parade.

In the meantime, overlooked in all this focus on Little League is the fact that the region does in fact have a national champion youth baseball team.

That would be the Broomall-Newtown team that captured the Babe Ruth 13 Prep World Series last weekend in Glen Allen, Va. And Broomall-Newtown is not done.

They'll be going for a twin-killing this week when their Babe Ruth 13-15 team looks to capture a second national title this week. They're playing on the left coast, out in Longview, Washington. You can read about their exploits here.

The town is planning a celebration for both teams next weekend.

You can bet we'll be there.
