How good are these 4-1 Eagles?

4-1.

Just keep repeating that to yourself this morning.

The Eagles are 4-1.

Remember how many years we would kill for that kind of start. Instead this morning many of us who experienced that agony of the Eagles nearly blowing a 34-7 lead, will wonder just how good this 4-1 team really is.

Chip Kelly's offense continues to sputter - in particular in the red zone.

LeSean McCoy gained 81 yards on 24 carries, but still doesn't seem to be himself. In fact, it was fairly telling that at the end of the game, with the Eagles desperately needing a first down to kill the rest of the clock, it was Darren Sproles who got the key carries.

The Eagles bolted to that big lead on the strength of their outstanding special teams, and an opprtunistic defense. Both of them scored again, with the Birds blocking a punt for a TD after the Rams' first offensive series, and the defense forcing harried young QB Austin Davis into a fumble that also was converted into a TD.

Kelly's offense continues to sputter. Nick Foles continues to make decisions that leave you scratching your head. He was lucky he did not have three or four more interceptions yesterday.

The Eagles secondary was torched late in the game as the Rams mounted their comeback. Corners Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams were torched along the way, too often failing to simply look back for the ball.

And yet there the Eagles sit this morning, 4-1, still tied with the Cowboys atop the NFC East.

We might get a better feel for how good this Birds team is Sunday night, when they will meet the Giants in a battle of NFC East titans. Another performance like yesterday's is very unlikely to have the same result.
