That drumbeat you hear is the growing din in opposition to a second casino license being granted in Philadelphia.
Next week the state Gaming Control Board is expected to award a second license in the city, joining the existing SugarHouse Casino.
Not everyone thinks this is a good idea.
Count Delaware County Council among them?
Why would leaders in Delco be upset by a second license in Philly?
Because they have an investment in Harrah's, located in Chester. Revenue, in particular from slots, is down. Putting another casino minutes away up I-95 at the South Philly sports complex, where most people think the new license is going to wind up, will not help.
County Council will hold a press conference this morning at 10:45 at the Ridley Township Police Department to lay out their case against another casino in the city.
They are urging the Gaming Control Board not to award the license.
They're not the only ones. State Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-159, who represents Chester, is on record as opposing the move. So is a group of residents in South Philly who already deal with the headaches caused by the sports complex, and who are less than thrilled about the idea of another casino coming to the neighborhood.
We'll be at this morning's press conference by County Council.
