Brad Fox will not be in the courtroom this morning when a Chester woman is sentenced in connection with a straw gun purchase.
But his presence certainly will be felt.
Fox was gunned down in the line of duty in Mongtomery County. Outraged that the man who shot him after a routine police chase had acquired the gun through an illegal straw gun purchase, legislators passed the Brad Fox Law, which beefs up penalties for those convicted of straw gun transactions.
A straw gun purchase occurs when someone buys a gun and then delivers it to someone who otherwise would not be able to acquire it legally.
That's where Staci Dawson enters the story.
This morning the Chester woman will become the first person to be prosecuted in Pennsylvania under the new Brad Fox Law.
Dawson was convicted in the straw purchase of two handguns for her boyfriend, a convicted felon.
The law mandates a minimum of five years in prison for anyone convicted a second time of a "straw purchase," with the intent of delivering the weapons to someone who cannot legally do so.
District Attorney Jack Whelan will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Sentencing for Dawson is set for 10 a.m. before Judge James Bradley.
We'll have complete coverage.
Brad Fox is not forgotten.
