Pope Francis is coming to Philly

These people take this 24-hour news cycle pretty seriously.

I awoke at the ungodly hour I get up each morning expecting to be besieged by manic Eagles fans lamenting the Birds' dismal showing in Green Bay.

That will be addressed in another blog item.

As usual, the news had other ideas.

Just as I was making the coffee, I heard the familiar "alert" that accompanies breaking news on KYW Newsradio.

While it had been widely reported and expected for months, it was now official.

Pope Francis formally announced that will be coming to Philadelphia in September next year for the World Meeting on Families. He is expected to offer an outdoor Mass at Logan Square on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

The last time that happened, when Pope John Paul II visted in October 1979, more than a million people gathered to see and hear the pontiff.

This time that number is expected to balloon to maybe two million people.

Delaware County has a big connection to the papal visit. Donna Farrell, of Springfield, who used to head communications for the archdiocese, is heading the committee charged with the massive undertaking of planning the conference and the pope's visit here to the City of Brotherly Love. We'll talk to her later today. Make sure you check back to DelcoTimes.com for updates.
