The fallout from Ferguson

I don't make any claim to know what is behind the outburst of violence that hit Ferguson, Mo., last night in the wake of a grand jury ruling that a police officer will not be charged in the shooting of an unarmed teen last summer.

The ruling touched off a wave of violence in the town, as well as more peaceful protests across the country.

What I do know is that I still wonder exactly how far this country has come in terms of race relations.

I am guessing that white people believe we have made great strides. I would think that many black people are not nearly as sure.

And it tells us - or it should - that we still need to have a serious conversation about race in this country.

Anyone else agree with me?
