The magic of Granite Run Mall

There must be some kind of magic in the halls of Granite Run Mall.

Every time we post a story on the fate of the struggling shopping mecca, our website explodes. Our Facebook page is filled with comments and fond memories.

It's clear a lot of people have close ties to the Middletown (no, it's not located in Media) complex that was one of the original shopping malls and state of the art when it opened its doors in 1974.

Not so much today.

The mall's days are numbered. Most of the structure is due to be demolished, replaced by more of a Town Center collection of retail shops and residential uses.

The three anchor stores - Sears, Boscov's and JC Penney - were supposed to remain.

Those plans have now changed as well.

Yesterday J.C. Penney announced it was closing 40 more stores as it continues its efforts to save the struggling retailer. Granite Run was on the list.

So what happens to the anchor plan? Michael Markman, who now owns the mall, told our Kathleen Carey that it should not be a problem.

The original plan was to locate a new movie theater on the upper level of Penney's. Now they will be able to use the entire space. You can read the full update here.

In the meantime, no doubt many longtime Delco residents will continue to remember the way it was at Granite Run.

Times change. So do shopping patterns. Malls aren't all that popular any more.

Soon Granite Run Mall - at least the way most people in these parts remember it - will be just another memory.
