After a thoroughly miserable winter, Mother Nature is offering a makeup card today. Temperatures are expected to soar into the 70s as baseball begins anew.
Unfortunately, in these parts, that means the Phillies. Beat writer Dennis Deitch offers a fairly dismal look at this year's Phils, who kick off the season at Citizens Bank Park vs. the Boston Red Sox at 3:05 p.m.
But while the Phillies should remind us just how far away that elusive next championship is for Philly sports fans, there is a big local connection to a team competing for a title today.
None other then Bo Ryan, a native of Chester who starred for the Chester Clippers, will lead his Wisconsin Badgers into the NCAA men's hoops tournament championship game tonight vs. mighty Duke.
Don't expect the Badgers to be star-struck. They got to this point Saturday night by taking down the previously undfeated Kentucky Wildcats.
Wisconsin is a relection of their coach, who in turn is a reflection of Delco, in particular Chester.
Very few cities can claim the kind of hoops excellence that is the backbone of Chester's legacy.
Ryan has excelled at every level of coaching. He has four Division III championship trophies accomplished at Wisconsin-Platteville.
Now he's at the big dance.
Count me among those who will be pulling for the pride of Chester tonight.
