Chester mayoral primary heating up

The Democratic Primary race for mayor of Chester is about to heat up.

Longtime state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-159, is challenging incumbent Democratic Mayor John Linder. The winner of that Democratic tilt will then face off in November against former Republican Mayor Wendell Butler.

This morning Kirkland will hold a press conference to talk about the city's persistent problem with random street violence and gunfire.

It was not a good weekend in Chester, with one person shot to death, several others wounded, and another stabbed.

Kirkland has not been a fan of the way Linder has approached the violence issue in his first term. He has been especially critical of the move to oust Chief Darren Alston and replace him with longtime Chester police fixture Joe Bail.

Kirkland in the past also has advocated for using the National Guard to help patrol Chester streets.

We'll tell you what he has to say.

Why discuss anything political if this conference is in reference to gun violence in the city of CHESTER, I think it's just a political stunt and he's using us as the people and our situation to gain votes. This CONFERENCE ISN'T GOING TO HELP OR STOP THE GUN VIOLENCE IN THE CITY OF CHESTER NEITHER IS THE NATIONAL GUARD. NOT TO MENTION! THE LAST STATE OF AN EMERGENCY IN THE CITY OF CHESTER THEIR WERE MULTIPLE HOMICIDES... AGAIN, THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN STOP GUN VIOLENCE IN THE CITY OF CHESTER ARE THE RESIDENT'S OF THE CITY...NOT A PPUBLICITY STUNT TO GAIN VOTES IN A POLITICAL RACE. NOW I QUESTION YOUR INTEGRITY AND SINCERITY IN THE RACE FOR MAYOR: F THE CITY OF CHESTER!
