Phils, Utley did everything but win

So much for the Chase Utley funk.

The Phillies' second baseman, who had been mired in a horrific slump to start the season, snapped out of it big time last night in a wildly entertaining game against the Mets.

Unfortunately, despite two homers from Utley, the Phils still managed to lose to the Gothams, 6-5. This despite the fact that they roughed up Mets' ace Matt Harvey for three runs on five hits in his six innings of work.

Cody Asche and Jeff Francoeur also went deep as the Phils put up one of the best offensive performances of the young season. But David Buchanan struggled, giving up five runs on nine hits in just 5 2/3 innings of work.

And while Utley heated up, the same cannot be said for Ryan Howard, who again left the Phils in the lurch with runners in scoring position. Howard went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

All of this was accompanied by a palpable edge to the game, as Buchanan hit two Mets, and Harvey plunking Utley in the behind in return.

Mets manager Terry Collins was tossed arguing a catcher interference call, there was a great bang-bang play at the plate, and a host of questionable umpiring calls.

In short, just about everything you could want in an early-season game - except a Phillies win.
