There's an interesting development in what should be a barn-burner of a race for state attorney general.
Democatic Attorney General Kathleen Kane, the first woman and first Democrat ever elected to the post, is up to her eyeballs in all kinds of investigations.
That obviously has led to increased speculation on who Republicans might put up against her in a re-election run. Of course that assumes she will run, and that if she does she will not be challenged in the primary.
But it's the Republican side of things that gets interesting, especially for those of us here in Delaware County.
Our friends out at PoliticsPa, the website that keeps tabs on what is going on in state politics and Harrisburg circles, decided to do a little poll to see who readers believe the Republican candidate should be.
Guess who's the leading vote-getter?
That would be none other than our very own Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan.
This morning Whelan was in the lead with 35 percent of the vote, topping former Montco D.A. Bruce Castor, who checked in at 29 percent. U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan, R-7, of Upper Darby, also a former Delco D.A. and U.S. attorney, got the backing of 8 percent of voters, along with state Sen. John Rafferty. Now retired state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Castille was lagging with just 4 percent of the vote.
We don't even know if Whelan has any interest in seeking statewide office, but we'll ask him today.
Speaking of the Democrats, it did not go unnoticed that Gov. Tom Wolf yesterday announced Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro to head the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
Shapiro could be a leading candidate to lead a Democratic challenge to the troubled Kane.
