Welcome to the Sam Bradford Era

Sam Bradford.

Get used to saying it.

He's your starting quarterback, Eagles fans. If he gets healthy - and if he can stay healthy, which he has not been that successful doing so far.

Forget Marcus Mariota. Yes, I know it will be hard. The Oregon QB who everyone believed would be the perfect candidate to run Chip Kelly's offense went No. 2 in last night's NFL Draft. The Eagles apparently did inquire about a deal with the Titans to move up to get him, but apparently believed the asking price was too much.

Has more effort and talk ever been expended on something that didn't happen.

Don't blame Chip Kelly for this one. Yes, he told us he believed Mariota was the best quarterback in the draft, and that he would win 'multiple' Super Bowls in the NFL. But he also said again and again that he would not 'mortgage the future' to get him. Were we not listening. Or did we simply get swept away in the usual hype that surrounds everything this team does.

This team now belongs to Sam Bradford. That might not be a bad thing. He was, after all, the first player taken in the NFL Draft back in 2010. When he was on the field with the Rams, it's clearly he has the potential to be a top-shelf NFL quarterback. That's the problem. He can't stay on the field.

Bradford is coming off a second ACL. He admits he's not yet ready to take part in full workouts. The hope is that he will be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around in July.

For now, Kelly's biggest job might be soothing the feathers of all the players whose names apparently were dangled out there as trade bait with the Titans. Some reports indicated the Birds were ready to deal Mychal Kendricks, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Boykin, Bradford and draft picks.

At least one person I know believes Kelly and the Eagles did the right thing.

Columnist Jack McCaffery was at the Eagles war room last night.

Eagles Nation was at a fever pitch yesterday afternoon in the hours leading up to the draft. "Do the Deal" was the mantra of the day.

Didn't happen.

Time to move on.

I guess the Eagles can now put those Sam Bradford jerseys on the market.

He's your starting quarterback.
