A regrettable first half for the Phillies

That thud you just heard was the Phillies entering the All-Star break by reaching some new lows.

Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Giants marked their 62nd defeat, against just 29 wins.

It is the most losses racked up by any Phils team before the All-Star break in Phillies' history. Considering some of the teams that have worn those red pinstripes, that is quite an accomplishment.

This year Phutile Phils shattered the previous mark of 61 losses before the break set by the 1997 Phillies. They are on course to lose 110 games, one short of the team record. Common sense would tell you that mark is in jeopardy.

It was their fifth straight defeat on what has become an embarrassing West Coast trip.

There as a time when the Brewers were giving them a run for their money as the worst team in baseball. Not any more. The Phils now have lost 10 more games than Milwaukee.

It is the seventh time the Phillies have been swept in a series of at least three games, and it's the first time the Giants have swept the Phils since September of 2000.

The Phillies starting pitchers ended the first half of the season with a lusty 5.44 ERA.

There's not much really left to say about this wretched season.

The specter of a Cole Hamels trade still hangs heavy over the roster as the July 31 trade deadline looms.

Other than that, it looks like baseball is dead in Philly.

At least for this summer.

Bring on Eagles training camp.
